People are always asking me where’s the best place to eat. Of course, the answer to that all depends on what you are looking for so I am going to break my reviews down into categories: Seafood, Steaks & Such, Barbecue, Italian, Fun Places to Go, Best Breakfast, Cheap Food, Lunch on the Beach and Fine Dining. So here is “Rod’s Restaurant Reviews.”
I will give you a brief description of the place and what I think of it, a star rating (* to *****) and their address. There are a lot of places to eat in Gulf Shores and this is just a list of safe bets. A way you can help is to post your restaurant experiences on our Gulfshoresbeachdays facebook page and I will use your input to update this list.
Mikey’s *****, located at 2nd Avenue, East 1st Street, Gulf Shores, Alabama, 251-948-6452. Mikey’s is a great local place to eat. It’s sort of hidden but not far from the beach. Good place, cheap drinks.
De Soto’s Seafood Kitchen *****, located at 138 West 1st Avenue, Gulf Shores, AL 36542, (251) 948-7294. De Soto’s is another good local place.
The Original Oyster House ****, located at 701 Gulf Shores Parkway, Gulf Shores, AL 36542 (251) 948-2445. You will probably end up waiting a long time to get into this place and I suppose it qualifies as a tourist trap but the food is good. It’s not cheap. This is one of the more popular restaurants in Gulf Shores and everyone goes to it.
The Gulf Island Grill ****, located at 244 East Beach Boulevard
Gulf Shores, AL 36542 (251) 968-4440 Try their Grouper Roulade. I love it.
Steaks & Such:
Nolan’s Restaurant & Lounge ***** This is a nice place. I don’t know if I would take young kids there. You’re going to pay $25 for as steak but it’s worth it. They also have a rear area with a live band 5 nights a week. They play 50’s music and country. If there are just two of you and you dance this is a nice night out.
LongHorn Steakhouse ****, 3810 Gulf Shores Parkway, Gulf Shores, AL 36542, (251) 967-3480. This is a pretty safe bet. It is located North of the inter-coastal on route 59 in front of Target.
Ribs & Reds ***, located at 128 East First Av.- Gulf Shores, Alabama (251) 948-7337. This place can be sort of hit or miss. I have had some good meals and some average. The ribs are good. I have never had a steak there.
Alabama is the home of Barbeque.
Moe’s Original Barbeque ****, located at 25603 PerdidoBeach Blvd, Orange Beach, (251) 981-7427. This is good barbeque
Hog Wild Barbeque (un-rated), 911 Gulf Shores Pkwy, Gulf Shores, AL 36542 (251) 540-2376. This is a new place that I haven’t actually gotten to yet but it is close to the beach and it’s pretty hard to miss with barbeque in Alabama.
Those in Gulf Shores may have no idea how to do Italian so be careful but here are a couple of restaurants that I do like:
Café Grazie *****, Located at 27267 Perdido Beach Blvd #101, Orange Beach, AL 36561-3239, (251) 981-7278. Best Italian in the area.
Papa Rocco’s ****, located at 101 West 6th Avenue
Gulf Shores, AL 36542, (251) 948-7262. This is a little bar that usually has live music (it can get loud) but the lasagna and spaghetti is good.
Crico’s Pizza ****, located at 309 Gulf Shores Parkway, Gulf Shores, AL 36542-6461 (251) 948-3100. Located just off the beach on Route 59. Very good pizza. They also have a pizza bar for lunch. I like the Veggie.
Fun Places to Eat!
The Hang Out *****, Located right where Route 59 hits the beach. What can I say? You got to go there, especially if you have kids. The food is good (not great) but the atmosphere… you just have to experience it.
LuLu’s **** This is Jimmy Buffet’s Sister’s place. It is laid out sort of like the Hang Out with lots of activities for kids and expensive boats parked near by. LuLu’s is not on the beach. It is on the inter-coastal so I would Mapquest it or use your GPS.
Flora-Bama *** located at17401 Perdido Key Dr, Pensacola, FL 32507. OK, this one is a pretty wild place, right on the beach. It’s called Flora-Bama because it is right on the Florida/Alabama state line. There’s live music, bikers and usually a Florida State trooper or two parked outside. Hey, if you’re bored try it out. I would only take kids there for lunch.
The Island House Hotel *****, 26650 Perdido Beach Blvd., Orange Beach, AL 36561 This is one of the best-kept secrets on the beach. Good prices and great food.
The West Beach Grille **** This is a fun place. It’s hidden on the West Beach Rd., just about 1/4 of a mile West of the Crystal Towers pedestrian walkway over the beach road. Best wings on beach, great sliders. OK to take the kids.
The Shrimp Basket *** Some people swear by the Shrimp Basket. It is mostly fried food. I’ll give you one guess what they are known for. They, also, have raw oysters. It’s good and it sort of cheap.
Tequila Mexican Restaurant *** 1545 Gulf Shores Parkway, Gulf Shores – (251) 968-5171. Located next to Bruno’s Super Market this place is not pretty but has decent Mexican. I usually have the Fajitas and a Margarita.
Peng Garden Chinese Buffet ****, 1404 South McKenzie Street, Foley – (251) 943-2600. This is probably 6-10 miles North of the beach on Route 59. It’s across the street and just a little farther North of the Tanger Outlet. This is one great Chinese buffet.
The American Legion ****, American Legion, 10960 Hwy 59 S, Foley, Alabama 36536-0182, USA. (251) 943-3114. Ok, this is real insider information. This place is located 6-8 miles North on 59. They have prime rib on Tuesdays and a bake potato for $10, Friday they serve steaks. I’m not sure if kids can go there because it is a bar (cheap drinks too). Call before you go to confirm prices and availability. It’s not bad, at all.
Lunch on the Beach:
Bahama Bob’s **** 601 West Beach Boulevard, Gulf Shores, AL 36542 (251) 948-2100 This is a great place for lunch. I usually get the grouper sandwich. It may very well have the best hamburger and fries on the beach. Right on the beach close to our Crystal Shores condo
Sea and Suds **** 405 E Beach Blvd
Gulf Shores, Alabama 36542 (251) 948-7894 This is a great place for shrimp oysters and beer. They also have a good cheap hamburger. It has a raw oyster bar. I think they have the best oysters on the beach. It’s right on the beach not far from our Lighthouse condo.
Cosmo’s **** 25753 Canal Road Orange Beach, AL 36561-8804 (251) 948-9663. Another good place for a more formal dinner and drinks. It’s a nice place. I wouldn’t take my kids there (unless I was rich) but I would take my wife.
Ginny Lane Bar and Grill **** 4780 Main Street, Orange Beach, AL 36561 (251) 224-6500. Another nice place. It is located at the Warf’ which is designed community with shops, boats, amphitheaters, restaurants, condos and homes. It was the last great Hara! before the real estate bust. Regardless, this is a nice place, upper end food. It’s small so you might have to wait to get seated.
